With AMT, IT technicians can remotely discover, troubleshoot, and protect the machine once it's connected to the network. They provide the ability to monitor the status of management and security technologies built into Intel's chip.

Intel's Active Management Technology (AMT) and Intel Remote PC Assistant Technology are the management utilities that come bundled with the ThinkServer TS200v. The metal edges surrounding the opened chassis are rounded to a smooth finish so you won't slice your fingers, but the chassis' removable side cover has some sharpness to it-consider yourself forewarned. Inside are 2 PCI –E slots one x1 and the other x16. The harness removes just as easily from its mount tray.

The harness has a pulley of sorts that allows you to slide the drive out of its bay without actually having to touch the HDD. The drives are encased with a flexible, plastic harness that encompasses the entire drive housing. The inside is roomy, and Lenovo makes removing or upgrading hard drives easy. The chassis is easily accessible via a button that pops open the side panel.

It does have an HDMI port, plus standard VGA.

It's got no legacy ports, so forget about adding a PS2 keyboard or mouse. It's a tower form factor with two USB drives in the front of the chassis plus six more in the back. It's also hardly a power hog my Kill-A-Watt tested it running idle at an average of just 30 watts. If you have a small business without a dedicated server room or rack, the TS200v is a good choice it will fit in any workspace without the overbearing noise of most servers. I was impressed right off the bat with how quietly the ThinkServer runs it's quieter than a lot of desktops. Both ends of the price scale are quite reasonable, given what's offered. The entry-level server configuration that lists for $299 ships with a 2.26 GHz Celeron G1101 processor, a 250 GB drive, and 1 GB of RAM. That's enough horsepower for day-to-day network tasks, and would cost $985.

As configured for my testing, this relatively lightweight server has an Intel Core i5 CPU 650 running at 3.20 GHz and 4 GB of RAM and drives, configured for RAID 1 with two 250 GB drives. It offers no high-availability features like dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, hot swappable drives, or redundant fans. The ThinkServer TS200v is a basic small business server capable of supporting up to two drives for RAID 0 (if performance is critical) or RAID 1 (for the data security of drive mirroring). Although the ThinkServer TS200v's performance results were good, this is not the server you want to use for mission-critical tasks such as a highly used database or a heavily trafficked Web server-for that, you'd go with a higher-end configuration of the Dell PowerEdge. Small businesses would be best advised to have a knowledgeable Windows networking techie on hand to set up features like DNS, DHCP, and Active Directory and also to manage Group Policies. The ThinkServer TS200v is beefier than the Mac mini, besting it in some performance tests, but since it comes with Window Server 2008 R2 Foundation installed, there's more expertise required in setting up and configuring the Lenovo than the admirably simple Mac mini. The ThinkServer is best suited for use as a Windows domain controller for a smaller network or as a robust file- and print server. The ThinkServer TS200v falls somewhere between Apple's Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server ($999, 4.5 stars) which is really suited to SOHO businesses, and Dell's PowerEdge T310 server ($4,496, 3.5 stars), which has more enterprise features. Still, it's a very good offering-especially for the affordable starting price of $299. Lenovo's ThinkServer TS200v small business server offers a few bells and whistles (like remote administration capabilities) that may be unnecessary for the smaller business.
